My Sicily trip DAY 7

TUESDAY
With Giuseppe’s niece, we went to the morning market that known to be an animals’ market. Indeed, we saw pigs, hens, parrots, birds, fishes, tortoises, horses, peacocks etc… Doesn’t like much the way they treat animal though…

Spent the whole afternoon at Giuseppe’s house. Had lunch with his family, his uncle and aunt from Belgium, a lunch that lasted almost 2 hours followed by cards game with his siblings, hens feeding, horse ‘teasing’ … an afternoon slipped away easily.

In the evening, at the beach near his uncle’s house, we met his cousin-Anna with her boyfriend-Giovanni. They wanted to go fishing, with the fish’s net(which is illegal of course) and so, after some bla bla bla between his uncle, Giovanni and Giovanni 2 (Anna’s brother) deciding where to go, and us thinking that it would be a nice experience to participate, we went along with them.
So there we are, at the beach in the cold. The sea wasn’t that calm at all. There were already some of their friends in the sea on their peddled boat. The net were released by the men, and when it was pulled back, there WERE some fishes trapped but they were all tiny and young…. poor little thing. My job is picking them up, trying to throw as many of them as I could back to the sea… Most of them died or were too weak to swim… Looking at that I feel sorry for what we have done to them…

They tried for a second time, but were able only to caught the same kind of small fishes as before.. Looking at them gasping for air, and eventually dying on the beach, it hits me hard. Being sorry for fishes might sound stupid, but they are lives too.. aren’t they?

I was doing my best to save them while the men are trying to catch some bigger fishes.. And at one point, this ‘Macho Italian dude’ put a still living fish in his mouth, closed it, and chewed on it…’Buonissima!!’ he said. Other were staring at him, laughing, joking, then another guy tried, followed by the others…. I was disgusted. Giuseppe was staring at them, amazed. The next thing that happened, is something that I wish it wouldn’t. He took one of this small struggling fish, looking at me, smiling. I pretended that I didn’t see him, and so he started calling my name. I walked away…

I saw him swallowed it. I want to go home….

How could you eat a fish alive???!!!! Which it’s still struggling for live? I mean, even if it’s just a fish, it doesn’t mean that we can kill them right? Animals kill for food, and us? We kill to have a good laugh about it after… I’m sure he’s going to tell his friend about it, that he swallowed a fish, alive! (And I was right! He did when we met Salvatore up in the evening!) It’s disgusting….
Ughh .. It’s terrible to see the other side of humanity.
