Slovenia - The fairy tale like country

If there a country that makes you feel like you are in a fairy tale, what country could it be? A country of which everywhere you turn, is a scenery that takes our breath away. A country of which everyone you meet, is someone that you will remember forever....For me, such a country do exist, and it's called Slovenia.

We went to the capital of Slovenia - Ljubljana by train. Departs 5 in the morning from Brescia and the whole journey took us 8 hours. We were hosted there by a chemist we contacted through hospitalityclub with a small apartment but a big heart. Knowing that I have just had my 21st birthday, he welcomed us with delicious home-prepared vegetarian dinner. We met also 2 other couchsurfers during the evening who brought us to a cool pub decorated by skeleton. (And of course, they are made of plastic). One of them - Beti who lent us her digital camera and thanks to her, we were able to take picture in Bled the next day!!

Early in the morning of our second day in Slovenia, we took a bus and headed to Bled after breakfast. Bled is a small town an hour away from Ljubljana which has only 5,000 habitants. On the bus, we met a Hong Kong girl and with her, we rent a boat to go to the Otok island which in the middle of the lake. Bled has a breathtaking view and no wonder it’s so famous being one of the must-visit places in Slovenia. It has a lake that reflects like a mirror, an island with a church on top in the middle of it, and the alps at the background. In the evening, we met up 2 other canadian for rafting in the upstream of river Sava and it had been fun.

In the eveningback in Ljubljana, we met some a few more couchsurfers for beer at the river bank.
Saturday was a beautiful day in Ljubljana. The sun was out and people are out in the city. We met Tushka and went for a walk at the market.

The market is full of florists and fruit stalls. People has their basket full of tulips and it was said that Ljubljana is a romantic city. The Preseren square, a meeting place for those in Ljubljana is named after the love poet Preseren. There’s a statue of him just in front of the 3 bridges and opposite to it, is Juliet’s window. Preseren, the Casanova of Slovenia, has been looking at the window of the girl he fell in love with for hundred years. However, the fact that he has many lovers is not mentioned. :D
In a town like Ljubljana, we will never feel alone. Under the statue of Preseren, we met a group of Aegees from Slovenia, Netherland and Hungary by accident while waiting for another couchsurfer whom I can’t remember his name right now. Anyway, he has travelled to Morocco from Slovenia on his bike!

On Sunday, we planned to visit Postojna. We took a bus to the beginning of the highway to try to hitchhike. However, it started to rain after just 10 minutes by the road! We were forced to head back to the station to take the bus. We were lucky that we arrived on time to catch the last bus before lunch time. Postojna, a town famous for its cave which is 20km deep and the home of the human fish, whose life was long shrouded in mystery and superstition. The discovery of this beetle is found in 1831 by Luka Čeč, the man who discovered the inner sections of Postojna Cave. The human fish has no eyes because it lives in the dark but it can lives up to 100 years like us. The cave is impressive. You have to see it with your own eyes to fully feel the impact of it..

During the evening, we had our last meal in Slovenia at a traditional restaurant in town called Slokol with Egor and his guests. (Members of Aegee that we met the day before.) On the following morning after breakfast, we caught the train to Italy. Our trip in Slovenia has been great. And I would love to go back soon. For the cities, the food, the people we met and above all, the friendships made.. To Teo, Jana, Beti, Katush, Katush’s friend, Igor, Sloveig, Paige and all the others, thank you for your accompany. You have made our trip an unforgettable one. Take care and hope see you guys soon again one day somewhere on earth! A big hug*
